Getting started: how the site works

Improve this page

This site builds your path from your goal. You choose a job, a skill or a certification, you state what you already know, and the site offers the next useful step: a lesson, a quiz, a lab or a proof. This short course explains each mechanism, lesson by lesson, for someone who is new to the site. Read it in order, or jump to the lesson you need.

What can I do here?

The site brings together reference documentation, courses, quizzes, labs graded on a real machine and a skills framework that links everything. You can use it in two ways: with a goal, and the site works out what you are missing, or by free exploration, without declaring anything.

There are four ways in, and they are not four names for “a course”:

  • aim for a job: its responsibilities, its missions, its skills;
  • acquire a skill: one precise gesture, with its prerequisites;
  • prepare a certification: the objectives of an official exam guide;
  • explore a domain: Linux, Kubernetes, CI/CD, with no goal.

How does the site choose what you learn?

The path engine starts from your goal, derives the expected skills and their prerequisites, removes what you already master, then orders what is left. A course is never imposed in full: you only follow the lessons that serve your goal.

goal → expected skills → prerequisites → what you know → what is missing → next step

How do you learn a skill?

Each skill is worked on in five distinct steps: read a lesson, test your understanding with a quiz, practise in a lab, prove it in an exam graded on the final state, then review your mistakes. Reading does not prove you can do it: the site keeps these steps apart instead of adding them up.

What the course covers

Three short parts, from choosing a goal to backing up your progress. Each lesson describes the real behaviour of the site, with the labels you will see on screen, and the course plan takes you from one to the next.

  1. Choose what you aim for: choose your goal, understand jobs and skills.
  2. The computed path: how it is computed, learn, test, practise, prove, courses, modules and lessons, prepare a certification.
  3. Day to day: My learning, progress and data, explore freely, then using the site day to day: follow a lesson, play a lab, take a quiz, report an error.

Your progress lives in your browser, and an optional account lets you sync it between your devices: the lesson on progress and data explains how to create that account, what it copies and how to leave it. The site stays fully usable without an account, with a file backup.

Where to start?

If you are aiming for a job, start by choosing a goal, then open My learning: your next step is already computed there. If you would rather discover, the course programme follows the order of the parts and keeps your progress, like every course on the site.

The navigation menu, opened by the three bars at the top left of every page, lists this course first in its “My learning” section, with “Choose a career path” and “Take the assessment”:

The navigation menu open for a new visitor: the My learning section with Getting started, Choose a career path and Take the assessment, then the Explore, Practice, Reference and The site sections, and the Contribute card

Is this project useful to you?

The guides, courses, quizzes and labs stay free. If you use them regularly, you can contribute to their upkeep and development.
